Made for the Shade

The shade can be a tough place to find plants that thrive. Diminished access to sunlight makes it tough for most plants to effectively photosynthesize, but there are many stunning shade lovers that can turn that dark spot into a lush oasis for pollinators!

Having a shady garden can be a lot of fun and opens up a whole new realm of possibilities!

Here's just a few of our favourites:

Lady Fern

A beautiful addition that adds texture to wherever it's planted. A rhizomatous, clump-forming fern that gets 2-3 feet tall and wide. A great filler plant for those hard to garden north sides of your house. Mixes well with Bleeding Hearts, Columbine, Geranium, Aruncus, and Packera.

Violets

Have your flowers and eat them too! These marvellous little wonders are excellent in salads, yes you can eat the leaves and flowers, are host to many Fritillary butterfly species, and are a fantastic groundcover for the shade! If you don't have violets, you need them in your life.

Wild Geranium

Gorgeous foliage and beautiful flowers, Geraniums have it all. Adored by native bees, the pink blooms perform their magic while the leaves provide interest in the palmated leaf shape. And in the fall, the leaves really come to life with a kaleidoscope of fall colours!
